勇于敢则杀,勇于不敢则活。此两者,或利或害。天之所恶,孰知其故?天之道,不争而善胜,不言而善应,不召而自来,繟然而善谋。天网恢恢,疏而不失。
现代白话译文

勇于敢做就会杀身,勇于不敢做就会活命。这两种勇气,一个有利,一个有害。天所厌恶的,谁知道是什么缘故?天的道,不争斗而善于获胜,不说话而善于应答,不召唤而自动到来,宽缓而善于谋划。天网广大无边,虽然稀疏却不会有一点漏失。

執「不敢」以「勇」,「敢」矣;「不敢」其所「不敢」,「勇」矣。「勇」「敢」之施,「殺」「活」之報,天乘其權,而我受其變,「難」矣。聖人畏其「難」,而承其「活」,不辭其「殺」,故「活」在己而「殺」任天下。何也?以己受」活」,則必有受「殺」者,氣數之固然,而不足詰也。夫唯已「活」而非以功,天下「殺」而無能罪,斯以處勸罪之外,而善救人物,我無「殺」「活」而天下亦「活」。彼氣數者,日敝敝以「殺」「活」為勞,其於我也,吹劍首之吷而已矣。是以聖人破「天網」而行「天道」。

此章教人遺形去欲,為入道之工夫,以造聖人無知之地也。凜然赫然而可畏者,謂之威。如云寒威,炎威,是也。是則凡可畏者,皆謂之威。唯國之大罰,與天地之肅殺,乃大威也。此借以為戕生傷性者之喻。世人以為小惡不足戒,而不知畏,必致殺身而後已。此民不畏威,大威至矣。喻世人祇知嗜欲養生,而不知養生者,皆足以害生而可畏也。且若嗜酒色,必死於酒色。嗜利欲,必死於利欲。嗜飲食,必死於飲食。是則但有所嗜,而不知畏,必至於戕生傷性而後已。此不畏威,故大威至矣。然人但知嗜而不知畏者,以其止知有身之可愛,有生之可貴,以此為足。而不知大有過於此者,性也。且吾性之廣大,與太虛同體,乃吾之真宅也。苟以性視身,則若大海之一涵,太虛之一塵耳,至微小而不足貴者。人不知此,而但以蕞爾之身。以為所居之地。將為至足,而貴愛之,則狹陋甚矣。故戒之曰,無狹其所居。狹其居者,將以此身此生為至足也。故又戒之曰,無厭其所生。厭,足也。若知此身此生之不足貴,則彼物欲固能傷生,亦不足以害我矣,以其無死地也。故曰夫惟不厭,是以不厭。厭,棄也。故聖人自知尊性,而不見生之可養。自愛遺形,而不見身之可貴。此聖人之所獨知,世人之所不知也。故去彼眾人之所知,取彼所不知,以為道之要妙耳。以此足見世人之所知者,皆病也。聖人病之而不取,故不病也。後三章互相發明此章之旨。
