谷神不死,是谓玄牝玄牝之门,是谓天地根。绵绵若存,用之不勤。
现代白话译文

虚空而神奇的道是永恒不灭的,这叫做深奥的母性。深奥母性的门户,叫做天地的根源。它连绵不绝地存在着,用之不尽。

谷神谷中央无谷者也.无形无影.无逆无违.处卑不动.守静不衰.物以此成而不见其形.此至物也.处卑守静不可得名.故谓之玄牝.天地之根绵绵若存用之不动.门玄牝之所由也.本其所由.与太极同体.故谓之天地之根也.欲言存邪.则不见其形.欲言亡邪.万物以之生.故绵绵若存也.无物不成用而不劳也.故曰用而不勤也。

谷神不死是谓玄牝者,谷养也,能养万物故曰神。欲害不死,故曰不死也。玄,天也,于人为鼻。牝,地也,于人为口。天食人以五气,从鼻入,藏于心;地食人以五味,从口入,藏于胃。

世之死「谷神」者無限也,登山而欲弋之,臨淵而欲釣之,入國而欲治之,行野而欲闢之。而「谷神」者不容死也,可弋,可釣,可治,可辟,而不先物以為功。疇昔之天地,死於今日;今日之天地,生於疇昔;源源而授之,生故無已,而謂之根。執根而根死,因根而根存。「綿綿」若綴乎!「不勤」若廢乎!因根以利用者,啟「玄牝之門」乎!

憨山德清《老子道德经解》(明)

此言道體常存,以釋上章虛而不屈,動而愈出之意也。谷,虛而能應者。以譬道體至虛,靈妙而不可測,亙古今而長存,故曰谷神不死。且能生天生地,萬物生生而不已,故曰是謂玄牝。牝,物之雌者。即所謂萬物之母也。門,即出入之樞機。謂道為樞機,萬物皆出於機,入於機。故曰玄牝之門,是謂天地根。綿,幽綿不絕之意。謂此道體至幽至微,綿綿而不絕,故曰若存。愈動而愈出,用之不竭,故曰不勤。凡有心要作,謂之勤。蓋道體至虛,無心而應用,故不勤耳。
